Scam #11: Dealer Second Dealing / Bottom Dealing

How it works

A skilled card mechanic (dealer) can deal the second card from the top of the deck instead of the top card, or deal from the bottom of the deck, to manipulate which player receives which cards. This requires significant sleight-of-hand skill and is rarely used in modern casino environments with shoe-dealt games. However, in hand-pitched games or where dealers handle cards extensively, a skilled mechanic can steer valuable cards to an accomplice or damaging cards to opponents. The dealer must first know the value of the top card (through peeks, marked cards, or other methods) to determine whether to deal it or the second card. When combined with a false shuffle that places known cards at known positions, second dealing becomes a powerful cheating tool.

Second dealing and bottom dealing are among the oldest card cheating techniques, dating back centuries. In modern casinos, the use of shoes and automatic shufflers has largely eliminated this threat, but it remains a concern in private games and jurisdictions with less regulation.
