Scam #15: Roulette Computer / Prediction Device
How it works
A roulette computer is an electronic device that uses physics to predict where the ball will land. The user (or a confederate) clicks a hidden button each time the ball passes a reference point, and again when the wheel passes a reference point. The computer calculates the ball’s velocity, the wheel’s velocity, the rate of deceleration, and uses a physics model to predict the likely landing octant or sector. The prediction is communicated to the bettor via a concealed earpiece, vibrating device, or digital display. Modern roulette computers can be hidden in smartphones (using the camera to track ball and wheel motion), smartwatches, or custom hardware. The device gives the player a substantial edge — potentially 20-40% over the house. In most jurisdictions (including Nevada since 1985, and the UK), using ANY electronic device to predict roulette outcomes is illegal.

Edward Thorp & Claude Shannon (1961): The legendary mathematician and information theorist built the first wearable roulette computer — a device the size of a cigarette pack strapped to the waist, with toe switches for input and audio output through an earpiece. It gave a 44% edge but was too delicate for practical extended use. Now on display at MIT. The Eudaemons (1978): A group of UC Santa Cruz physics students led by J. Doyne Farmer and Norman Packard built a shoe computer using a 6502 microprocessor. The wearer tapped toe-switches to input timing data; predictions were communicated via solenoid vibrations on the chest/ankle. They won approximately $10,000 in Las Vegas before disbanding due to hardware issues (including one member receiving burns from an overheated solenoid). The Ritz Team (2004): Three Eastern Europeans used mobile phone-based roulette computers at London’s Ritz Casino to win £1.3 million over two nights. They were arrested but ultimately not charged — UK law at the time did not specifically cover their method, and their winnings were returned.
