Part III: Slot Machine Cheating · Physical Cheating Methods

SCAM #16: Magnetic Reel Control

Reel ManipulationSkill: Amateur

How it works

In the era of purely mechanical slot machines with metal reels, cheats could use powerful magnets to influence the outcome of spins. After pulling the handle to start the reels spinning, the cheat would apply a strong magnet to the outside of the machine near where the reels were located. The magnetic field would interfere with the metal mechanisms, causing the reels to slow down or “float” rather than stopping at their intended positions. With practice, cheaters could learn to time the magnet application to influence where the reels stopped, potentially creating winning combinations.

Where it appears

Old mechanical slot machines with metal reels and magnetic internal components (pre-1980s).

On the record

This technique only worked on truly mechanical machines with metal components. The introduction of microprocessor-controlled slots in the 1980s, followed by fully computerized video slots, rendered magnetic attacks completely obsolete.
