SCAM #30: Software Glitch Exploitation

How it works

Players deliberately exploit known software bugs or glitches to trigger unintended payouts. By playing a specific pattern of stakes and games, players can confuse the machine and trigger a glitch that pays out the jackpot. Some cheats research and share information about specific machine vulnerabilities, traveling from casino to casino to exploit the same glitch before manufacturers patch it. In one case, a married couple inadvertently discovered a roulette ETG (electronic table game) software bug that allowed them to receive free play without it being subtracted from their account balance. They hid their crime by cashing out often and “washing” tickets through multiple machines.

In 2007, slot technicians discovered that hitting different button combinations on some multi-denomination, multi-game machines could change credit values from 5 cents to 25 cents or higher. Manufacturers issued patches, but not all casinos installed them promptly, leaving vulnerabilities exposed for extended periods.
