SCAM #31: Hopper Theft by Slot Technicians

How it works

Slot technicians with authorized machine access steal coins or tokens from hoppers during legitimate service calls. The technician opens the machine for “maintenance,” removes coins from the hopper, and closes the machine. Because they have authorized access and keys, this theft can go undetected for extended periods. More sophisticated versions involve manipulating hopper count records to cover the theft.

A patent for a “coin hopper with preventive fill detector and automatic inventorying” was filed in 1996 specifically to address technician fraud. The system weighs the hopper before and after servicing to detect discrepancies. The system records which electronic key was used, identifying the responsible individual.
