SCAM #9: Bill Validator Blinding (Optic Device)

How it works

As casinos transitioned from coin-operated to coinless machines with bill validators, cheats adapted the light wand concept to the new technology. This device used a bright LED or light source aimed at the bill validator’s optic sensors to essentially “blind” the validator, causing it to accept bills incorrectly or add credits without properly reading the denomination. The device would be inserted near the bill validator’s optic readers, flooding them with light and confusing the validation system.

This was one of several hybrid devices that emerged during the transition from coin to coinless gaming. Other devices included the credit accelerator, bill validator pull-string device, and coin acceptor disabler. Organized groups of slot cheats traveled worldwide implementing these techniques.
