1.28 Greater Bay Area (GBA)

Macau — Regional Development

The Greater Bay Area is a Chinese government development initiative that integrates Macau, Hong Kong, and nine cities in Guangdong Province (including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai) into a single economic zone. For Macau’s gaming industry, the GBA initiative has significant implications including improved infrastructure (the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge reduced travel time from Hong Kong to Macau to approximately 45 minutes), increased mainland Chinese visitation, and pressure on Macau to diversify beyond gaming into tourism, convention, and entertainment offerings.

In practice

All six concessionaires are required under their 2022 concession contracts to make substantial non-gaming investments as part of Macau’s economic diversification strategy within the GBA framework.
