1.9 Macau GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue)
Macau — Economics/Finance
Gross Gaming Revenue in Macau represents the total amount wagered by players minus winnings paid out — essentially the casino’s win before expenses. Macau GGR is reported monthly by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau and serves as the primary economic indicator for the gaming industry and the Macau SAR government. GGR peaked at approximately US$45 billion (MOP 360 billion) in 2013, fell sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic to US$7.5 billion in 2022, and has been recovering since China’s reopening. Gaming tax revenue from GGR funds approximately 80% of the Macau government’s budget.
In practice
Macau’s GGR exceeded the Las Vegas Strip’s gaming revenue every year from 2006 onward, making Macau the world’s largest casino gaming market by a significant margin.
