10. Volatility (Slot Volatility / Game Volatility)

Foundational Probability

Volatility describes the degree of risk and reward variation in a casino game, indicating how dramatically a player’s bankroll can fluctuate during a session. High-volatility games feature infrequent but potentially large payouts, creating an experience with significant swings between wins and losses. Low-volatility games offer more frequent but smaller wins, providing steadier gameplay. Slot developers classify their games using volatility ratings (typically low, medium, or high) to help players select games matching their risk tolerance. For casino operations, high-volatility slots require larger float reserves because they can experience extended periods without significant payouts.

In practice

Volatility is distinct from house edge — two games can have identical RTP but very different volatility profiles. Megaways slots and progressive jackpot games are typically high volatility; classic three-reel slots tend to be lower volatility.
