28. Playing Efficiency (PE)

Playing efficiency measures how effectively a card counting system identifies situations where the player should deviate from basic strategy to maximize advantage, expressed as a value between 0 and 1. Higher playing efficiency means the count provides better guidance for playing decisions (hitting, standing, doubling, splitting, surrendering). The Hi-Lo system has a playing efficiency of 0.51, while more advanced multi-level systems like Omega II achieve PE of approximately 0.67. However, most of a card counter’s profit (roughly 80%) comes from bet variation based on the count, with only about 20% coming from playing deviations. Surveillance teams are primarily concerned with detecting bet spreading patterns rather than subtle playing deviations.

In practice

PE is less practically important than BC because bet sizing is the primary profit driver for card counters. The Illustrious 18 deviations account for the vast majority of playing efficiency gains.
