3.6 Okada Manila
Philippines — Property
Okada Manila is an integrated resort in Entertainment City owned by Universal Entertainment Corporation (founded by Japanese pachinko tycoon Kazuo Okada). The property features a casino, hotel, the world’s largest multi-color dancing fountain, and luxury retail. Okada Manila has been the subject of high-profile corporate governance disputes, including a 2017 physical takeover of the property by Okada’s associates that resulted in multiple lawsuits and regulatory interventions. In 2023, the property was sold to a consortium led by 26 Capital for US$2.6 billion.
In practice
The Okada Manila ownership saga is one of the most dramatic corporate battles in Asian gaming history, involving physical confrontations at the property and multiple court cases across jurisdictions.
