33. Side Count (Ace Side Count)

Blackjack Math

A side count is a secondary count maintained alongside the primary running count to track additional cards of strategic importance, most commonly aces. Because aces have a unique effect on blackjack probability — they increase the likelihood of blackjacks (which pay 3:2) but do not help as much with hitting stiff hands — tracking them separately from the main count provides more precise betting and playing decisions. When a player maintains an ace side count, they adjust their true count based on the density of remaining aces to optimize bet sizing. Side counts are a hallmark of advanced card counters and are used with multi-level systems like Omega II, Hi-Opt I, and Hi-Opt II.

In practice

An ace side count can improve a system’s betting correlation significantly — for example, improving Omega II’s BC from 0.92 to 0.99. Some systems also use side counts for 8s or other specific cards. Maintaining a side count requires substantial additional mental processing.
