Poker Math
Combinatorics in poker is the mathematical analysis of the number of possible hand combinations within a defined range, used to calculate the relative frequency of different hand types. There are 1,326 possible starting hand combinations in Texas Hold’em (52 x 51 / 2), comprising 78 suited combinations, 78 off-suit combinations, and 13 pocket pairs (6 combinations each). As community cards are revealed and player actions provide information, combinatorics helps narrow an opponent’s range by eliminating impossible combinations. Blockers — cards in a player’s hand that reduce the likelihood of an opponent holding certain hands — are a direct application of combinatorics. For example, holding the Ace of hearts reduces the number of possible ace-king combinations an opponent can hold by 25%.
In practice
Formula for combinations of pocket pairs: C(3,2) = 3 if one card is visible; C(4,2) = 6 with no cards visible. For suited hands: 1 combination if one card is held as blocker; 4 with no blockers. Combinatorics helps determine bluffing and value betting frequencies in GTO play.
