44. Bluffing Frequency / Optimal Bluffing Frequency

Optimal bluffing frequency is the theoretically correct ratio of bluffs to value bets that makes an opponent indifferent between calling and folding with their bluff-catchers. In GTO poker, the bluffing frequency on a given street is determined by pot odds and bet sizing: OBF = Bet / (Pot + 2 x Bet). For example, when betting half-pot on the river, the optimal bluffing frequency is approximately 25% (one bluff for every three value bets). If a player bluffs more than the optimal frequency, opponents can exploit them by calling more often; if they bluff less, opponents can exploit by folding more. In practice, bluffing frequencies must increase on earlier streets (flop and turn) because additional cards may improve bluffing hands to value hands.

In practice

The optimal bluff-to-value ratio assumes the bettor’s range contains only nuts or air and the defender’s range contains only bluff-catchers. In reality, ranges contain medium-strength hands, making the calculation more complex. Polarized ranges (strong hands and bluffs) are used on the river; merged ranges (including medium-strength hands) are used on earlier streets.
