Slang — Sports Betting
“Steam” refers to sudden, heavy betting action on a particular side of a wager, causing sportsbooks to rapidly adjust their lines. Steam bettors (or “steam chasers”) attempt to follow and bet on line movements caused by sharp (professional) money. In casino surveillance, “steam” can also refer to a player displaying visible frustration or anger after losses — “steaming” players are escalation risks who may become disruptive.
In practice
Steam betting is a significant concern for sportsbook operations as it can indicate the presence of professional betting syndicates or inside information. Many sportsbooks will limit or refuse bets from known steam chasers.
