“Tilt” is a state of emotional frustration or irrationality that causes a gambler to deviate from optimal strategy and make increasingly poor decisions. A player “on tilt” typically chases losses, increases bet sizes recklessly, and abandons discipline. The term originated in pinball but is widely used in poker and broader casino contexts. Tilt can be triggered by a bad beat, a string of losses, or even external life stress.

In practice

Responsible gambling programs train floor staff to recognize signs of tilt — agitated behavior, rapid bet sizing changes, verbal frustration — and to intervene appropriately. Identifying tilted players is a key surveillance function.
