6.17 Sucker Bet
Slang — Betting
A “sucker bet” is a wager with an excessively high house advantage, poor payout odds, or conditions that make winning highly improbable. Sucker bets include proposition bets on craps (e.g., Any Seven at 16.67% house edge), insurance in blackjack, most side bets, and certain slot machine features. Casinos offer sucker bets because they generate high-margin revenue from unsophisticated players who do not understand the odds.
In practice
While all casino games carry a house edge, sucker bets are distinguished by their particularly unfavorable conditions. Surveillance teams monitor sucker bet activity to identify potentially vulnerable players who may need responsible gambling intervention.
