6.20 Degenerate Gambler

Slang — Problem Gambling

A “degenerate gambler” is a pejorative term for an individual whose gambling has become compulsive and destructive, causing significant harm to their finances, relationships, and well-being. The term implies that the person has lost all control over their gambling behavior and continues to gamble despite severe negative consequences. While not a clinical term, it describes the most severe manifestation of problem gambling.

In practice

Casino responsible gambling programs are specifically designed to identify and intervene with degenerate gamblers before they experience catastrophic harm. Most jurisdictions now mandate responsible gambling training for all casino staff.
