Slang — Superstition/Terminology

A “cooler” has two distinct meanings in casino terminology. First, it refers to a person (typically a dealer or player) who is perceived to bring bad luck to a table — after they arrive, the table goes “cold” and players start losing. This is pure superstition but is a deeply held belief among many gamblers, particularly in Asian gaming markets. Second, in surveillance and security contexts, “cooler” can refer to a predetermined deck of cards used in a sting operation or integrity test. The 2008 film “The Cooler” popularized the first meaning.

In practice

Casino personnel, especially dealers and floor supervisors, are acutely aware of cooler mythology. Pit bosses may rotate dealers or shift assignments when a table goes cold to appease superstitious players.
