Advantage Play

+EV play refers to any wager or strategy where the mathematical expected value is positive for the player, meaning the player has a long-term advantage over the casino. In standard casino games, virtually all bets have negative expected value (-EV) for the player. However, +EV situations can arise through advantage play techniques (card counting, hole carding), game design errors (incorrect paytables), promotional offers with positive expected value, and progressive jackpots that have grown large enough to overcome the base game’s house edge. Casino surveillance and game protection teams are specifically tasked with identifying +EV situations and players exploiting them. Game mathematicians analyze all new games and promotions to ensure they do not inadvertently create +EV opportunities.

In practice

A simple example of +EV play: a video poker progressive where the jackpot has grown large enough that the overall return exceeds 100%. A $1,000,000 progressive on a Royal Flush game might push the overall RTP from 98% to 101%, creating a +EV situation for skilled players who know perfect strategy.
