7.18 Handle vs. Drop

“Handle” and “drop” are two different measures of gaming volume. “Drop” refers to the total amount of cash or chips deposited into a gaming table’s drop box or a slot machine’s bill acceptor. “Handle” refers to the total amount wagered, including money that is won and re-wagered. For example, a player who puts $100 into a slot machine and plays until it is gone may have generated $1,000 or more in handle through repeated wagering. Handle is always significantly larger than drop and is the basis for theoretical win calculations.

Understanding the distinction between handle and drop is essential for casino operations. Slot machines track both metrics automatically, while table games typically report drop and win only, with handle estimated through player tracking or observed average bet multiplied by hands played.
