73. Drawing Odds (Poker)
Poker Math
Drawing odds in poker refer to the probability of completing a drawing hand (such as a flush or straight) on the next card or by the river, typically expressed as a ratio or percentage. The most common drawing scenarios include: flush draws (9 outs, approximately 4.1:1 against hitting on the next card), open-ended straight draws (8 outs, approximately 4.8:1), gutshot straight draws (4 outs, approximately 10.5:1), and flush plus straight combo draws (15 outs, approximately 2.1:1). Drawing odds are compared against pot odds to determine whether calling a bet with a drawing hand is mathematically correct. In casino poker rooms, understanding drawing odds is fundamental to competent play and should not be confused with angle-shooting or collusion.
In practice
The “Rule of 2 and 4” provides quick estimates: multiply outs by 2 for the percentage chance of hitting on one card, and by 4 for the chance of hitting by the river from the flop. For example, a flush draw with 9 outs has approximately 18% chance on the turn and 36% by the river. The exact odds are slightly different because they account for unknown opponent cards.
