The colloquial term for the overhead network of surveillance cameras and the surveillance department itself in a casino. The phrase originated in the mid-20th century when security personnel physically walked elevated catwalks above gaming areas to observe play from above. Today, the “eye in the sky” refers to the comprehensive system of ceiling-mounted cameras, monitoring rooms, and surveillance personnel that collectively monitor all casino activities to detect cheating, theft, and procedural violations.

In practice

The term is used by both casino staff and patrons; some casinos install empty dome covers as psychological deterrents. The phrase has entered general English usage beyond the casino industry.
