RNG (Random Number Generator)

Slot Technology

The core algorithmic component of every modern slot machine that generates thousands of random numbers per second, each mapped to a specific reel stop or game outcome. When the player initiates a spin (by pressing a button or pulling a lever), the RNG selects a number that determines the result, which is then translated into the visual display on the reels. The RNG operates continuously even when the machine is idle, ensuring that outcomes cannot be predicted or influenced by timing. Regulatory bodies require RNGs to be tested and certified by independent laboratories (such as GLI, BMM Testlabs, or eCOGRA) to verify true randomness and compliance with jurisdictional standards.

In practice

RNGs used in gaming are technically pseudorandom — they use mathematical algorithms seeded from an entropy source. They are designed to be statistically indistinguishable from true randomness over billions of iterations. All gaming RNGs must be tamper-proof and sealed within the machine’s secure hardware.
