UV Markings (Ultraviolet Markings)
Countermeasures
Invisible security features embedded in gaming chips and playing cards that are visible only under ultraviolet (UV) light. UV markings are a fundamental anti-counterfeiting measure, with each casino using proprietary UV patterns that are difficult to replicate. Cage cashiers and surveillance personnel use UV light sources to verify the authenticity of chips during redemptions and inspections. Some card marking detection also relies on UV examination.
In practice
UV markings must be regularly updated as counterfeiters may eventually replicate known patterns; many casinos now supplement UV markings with RFID technology for enhanced security.
