Part II: Table Game Cheating · Dice & Craps Cheating Methods

Dice Shell (Expanded Die Shell)

Dice SwitchingSkill: Professional (historical)

How it works

An elaborate device consisting of a hollow shell that fits perfectly over a legitimate die. The shell contains the desired number on its face and is designed to fit so precisely that it appears to be a normal die. The cheat can switch a die by simply placing the shell over the legitimate die, changing its displayed number instantly. In craps, this is sometimes called “The Craps Cooler” - a complete rigged layout and equipment set that can be switched into a game. A cooler may include matching gaffed dice, a rigged stick, and other equipment.

On the record

In the early days of casino craps, before standardized procedures, “coolers” (complete rigged equipment sets) were a significant threat. Modern casino procedures and surveillance have rendered these largely obsolete.

Published as a detection reference for surveillance, compliance and gaming-operations professionals. Thresholds and tuning are set by the property. Nothing here is instruction — the method is described so it can be recognised.
