SCAM #12: Coat Hanger / Spooning Device

How it works

A primitive but effective method of cheating coin-dispensing slot machines. The cheat would insert a metal coat hanger or stronger metal rod up the coin payout chute to manipulate the “rocker arm” at the top of the coin hopper. The rocker arm was a simple mechanical counter – each coin passing under it lifted the arm, registering one count, before a spring pulled it back down. By manually lifting the rocker arm with the inserted rod, the cheat could cause coins to pass through without being counted. The machine would continue dispensing until the hopper was empty or a timeout occurred. Some cheats were apprehended with severely beaten hands from repeatedly punching the inside of the coin tray while attempting to engage the rocker arm.

George Joseph’s training materials document that some slot cheats were “apprehended with their hands beat up and bruised” from attempting to insert rigid metal rods up the chute. The spring on the rocker arm was strong enough to cause significant injury when the rod missed its target.
