SCAM #14: The Hanger (Actuator Arm Defeat)

How it works

After Tommy Carmichael’s light wand became widespread, IGT introduced a protective device called the Actuator Arm. This was a mechanical arm designed to protect the optic sensors from being blinded by light-based devices. Carmichael quickly obtained one of these new machines and, according to his own account, “it took us about an hour to beat it with ‘the hanger.’” The hanger was a specialized tool designed to bypass or defeat the Actuator Arm protection, allowing the light wand or similar devices to continue working.

Carmichael’s rapid defeat of the Actuator Arm – within an hour – demonstrates the constant arms race between cheaters and manufacturers. For every security feature introduced, the most sophisticated cheats would quickly find a bypass.
