SCAM #19: Bill Validator Device (Denomination Fraud)

How it works

A deceptively simple device that wraps around a low-denomination bill (typically $1 or $5) to fool the slot machine’s bill validator into reading it as a high-denomination bill ($100). The device is camouflaged to look like real currency – often two plastic strips that align LEDs with the validator’s scanner cells, disguised by wrapping a bill around it. When the prongs are inserted into the bill validator, they make the machine think $100 has been inserted. The cheat keeps the actual bill and can reuse the device repeatedly. Some versions could add credits without any bill at all after the first insertion.

George Joseph documented these devices extensively in his training materials. He noted that early bill validators only read the center or corners of inserted bills, making them vulnerable to the “mis-made bill” technique (cutting strips from different denominations and swapping them).
