Scam #19: Soft Count Team Theft

How it works

Members of the soft count team (responsible for counting cash and chips from table game drop boxes) steal currency or chips during the counting process. Methods include: palming cash during the count; substituting counted currency with counterfeit or lower-denomination bills; miscounting and recording false amounts; stealing from drop boxes before the official count begins; and altering count sheets to cover shortages. The soft count room is a high-risk area because it handles large volumes of cash with limited oversight. A manager with access to the drop box storage room who also controls surveillance can pre-count cash before the official count team arrives, creating opportunities for theft.
