Scam #23: Player Tracking and Comps Manipulation

How it works

Employees with access to player tracking databases can manipulate player accounts for personal gain. Methods include: creating fake player accounts to generate free play credits or comps; converting player points to cash for themselves or friends; upgrading player tier status without authorization; generating duplicate player cards for account theft; and manipulating player histories to qualify for promotions. In some cases, employees generate replacement player cards for themselves and friends, then cash the points. Others create multiple accounts to receive free play money multiple times. The fraud is often discovered when data analytics reveal unusual patterns in account activity or when players report unauthorized account changes.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board reported “numerous incidents” where casino databases were compromised, with potential for identity theft and points fraud. Player tracking fraud has grown as loyalty programs have become more valuable.
