How it works

Employees with technical access to slot machines or gaming systems can manipulate game parameters to alter payouts. Methods include: changing return-to-player (RTP) percentages; modifying jackpot trigger thresholds; disabling security features; installing unauthorized software; manipulating progressive jackpot meters; and using supervisor credentials to authorize fraudulent payouts or free credits. In the Desert Diamond case, a slot employee used supervisor login credentials to generate hundreds of phony jackpot tickets. The theoretical RTP of slot machines can range from 75% to 98%, and even small unauthorized adjustments can have massive financial impact over time. Some employees have been caught using their technical access to trigger jackpots or free play credits.

The Desert Diamond Casino case demonstrated how a single employee with supervisor credentials could generate $664,000 in fraudulent payouts over two years.
