SCAM #26: Player’s Card / Free Play Ticket Fraud

How it works

A sophisticated inside job involving casino employees. In a major case at Mohegan Sun Pocono (Pennsylvania), a cocktail waitress noted player card numbers from VIP guests and passed them to a VP of Player Development, who created duplicate player cards loaded with free play credits. An accomplice gambled the free play and split profits with the team. Over 11 months (May 2014 to April 2015), the team stole $478,350 in free play, converting it to $418,793 in cash. The scam was discovered when a jealous dealer revealed the scheme after being involved in a love triangle with the conspirators.

Robert Pellegrini (VP of Player Development) was sentenced to 32 months in prison. The casino was fined $1 million by Pennsylvania regulators. The case demonstrated that even senior employees with legitimate access can exploit weak internal controls.
