Part III: Slot Machine Cheating · Physical Cheating Methods
SCAM #27: Counterfeit Player’s Cards and Magstripe Duplication
How it works
Using basic equipment, cheats can duplicate the magnetic stripe on player cards or credit cards. The cheat creates a phony player’s card with another guest’s name and account information, substituting their own name that matches their ID. They then use the duplicated card at gift shops or other retail outlets to purchase merchandise with another player’s accumulated free play points or comps. When presenting the card and matching ID, cashiers may be fooled into approving the transaction.
Where it appears
Casino retail outlets, gift shops, restaurants, and any venue accepting player points for payment.
On the record
This method exploits the relative ease of duplicating magstripe cards, a well-known vulnerability in payment systems. The defense is procedural – careful verification by all staff handling card-based transactions.
