Part III: Slot Machine Cheating · Physical Cheating Methods
SCAM #4: Foreign Coin Matching
How it works
Cheats exploit coin size and weight similarities between different currencies or denominations. By finding foreign coins that match the size and approximate weight of legitimate slot tokens, cheats can use them at a fraction of the real value. Notorious examples include using New Zealand coins in Australia (worth ~20% less), Syrian pound coins in Norway (resembling 20-krone coins), and South Korean 100-won coins as U.S. quarter substitutes. Some cheats filed down coins from one denomination to match another.
Where it appears
Slot machines with basic weight/size coin comparators, especially in border regions or tourist-heavy areas with international currency circulation.
On the record
The Norwegian postal service (Posten Norge) closed many coin-to-banknote machines in 2006 due to widespread use of Syrian pound coins as slugs. Australian casinos experienced significant losses from New Zealand coins before the currencies diverged.
