SCAM #6: Coin Spinning (Plastic Wire Method)

How it works

A clever variation on the yo-yo technique where the cheat attaches a short length of plastic wire to a coin and spins it as it enters the machine. The weight and size of the coin are accepted by the machine, granting credits. However, the spin created by the plastic wire causes the coin to exit through the reject chute into the payout tray rather than dropping into the machine’s coin storage. The cheat can then retrieve the coin from the payout tray and reuse it indefinitely.

This technique was documented as a specific vulnerability of early mechanical acceptors and was referenced in Wikipedia’s slot machine fraud section as a “particular scam” that became obsolete due to newer machine improvements.
