4.2 Crown Resorts

Australia — Corporate

Crown Resorts is Australia’s largest casino and entertainment group, founded by the late media mogul Kerry Packer and later expanded by his son James Packer. Crown operates Crown Melbourne (Australia’s largest casino complex), Crown Perth, and was developing Crown Sydney (Barangaroo) before a series of regulatory scandals led to significant restrictions on its operations. Crown has been embroiled in controversy over money laundering, junket operator relationships (including with Suncity Group), and governance failures that resulted in findings of unsuitability to hold gaming licenses in multiple states.

In practice

The 2021 Bergin Inquiry in New South Wales found Crown unsuitable to operate its Barangaroo casino license, leading to massive corporate restructuring, executive resignations, and the appointment of an independent monitor. In 2022, Blackstone Group acquired Crown Resorts for approximately A$8.9 billion.
