7.17 Theoretical Win (Theo)

Industry — Mathematics/Finance

Theoretical win (commonly called “theo”) is the mathematical calculation of the amount a casino expects to win from a player based on their total wagers multiplied by the house edge. For example, if a player wagers $10,000 on a game with a 2% house edge, their theo is $200. Theo is the primary metric used by casino player development departments to determine comp eligibility, host assignment, and VIP tier status. Unlike actual win, which fluctuates due to luck, theo is predictable and forms the basis of casino marketing.

In practice

Theo calculations vary by game — baccarat theo is typically calculated at 1.2-1.5% of handle for Banker bets, while slot machine theo can range from 2% to 15% depending on the machine. In Macau, theoretical win replaced rolling chip turnover as the primary player value metric after the junket industry collapse.
