Foundational Probability
Theoretical win, commonly called “theo,” is the expected casino profit from a player’s gambling activity, calculated as the player’s total wagers (handle or coin-in) multiplied by the house edge of the games played. For example, a blackjack player who wagers $50,000 with basic strategy (0.5% house edge) generates approximately $250 in theoretical win. Theo is the foundation of casino player rating and loyalty program systems — complimentary offers (rooms, meals, entertainment) are typically allocated as a percentage (20-40%) of the player’s theoretical win. For slot players, theo is calculated directly from coin-in and the game’s theoretical hold percentage. Understanding theoretical win is essential for surveillance when evaluating whether a player is genuine or an advantage player — advantage players minimize theo relative to their actual winnings.
In practice
Formula: Theo = Handle x House Edge. ADT = Average Daily Theo, a key metric for player segmentation and comp allocation. “Actual win” is what the casino actually won from the player, which varies from theoretical win due to randomness. Player reinvestment ratio = (Total Comps Given) / (Total Theo Generated), typically 20-40% depending on the market.
