Midnight (Boxcars)

Slang for a roll of 12 (two sixes, or 6-6). The term “midnight” refers to 12 o’clock, while “boxcars” describes the appearance of the two six-sided dice showing maximum pips, resembling railroad boxcars. A roll of 12 is significant because it is a losing craps number on the come-out roll for pass line bets, a push (bar) for don’t pass bets, and pays 30:1 on proposition bets on 12. The stickman typically calls “midnight” or “boxcars” when 12 is rolled to avoid confusion and maintain table atmosphere.
