Deckmate 2 / Shuffler Hacking

How it works

Exploiting vulnerabilities in automatic card shufflers—specifically the widely used Deckmate 2—to read the exact order of cards before they are dealt, giving cheaters complete knowledge of all players’ hands. Security researchers demonstrated that a small device (e.g., Raspberry Pi) can be plugged into the Deckmate 2’s exposed USB port to alter firmware and access the internal verification camera. The camera sees every card in order; this data is transmitted via Bluetooth to a nearby phone, which can predict every hand. Even without USB access, someone with physical access to the machine’s internals can pre-rig it.

On the record

A 2025 federal indictment alleged that an organized crime-linked gambling ring used hacked or pre-rigged Deckmate 2 shufflers to steal millions over several years. The indictment described a “quarterback” receiving hand information on a phone and using covert signals to direct play. IOActive researchers demonstrated the hack at Black Hat 2023, and WIRED journalists replicated it in a live demo in 2025.
