How it works

The use of hidden electronic devices to read invisible markings on cards or RFID chips embedded in cards, transmitting hole card information to cheaters in real time. Cards are marked with invisible barcodes or infrared ink on edges or backs. Hidden cameras in chip trays, phone cases, or clothing read the markings. RFID-enabled cards can be scanned by hidden readers. Information is relayed to the cheater via earpiece, phone, or vibrating device.

The 2025 federal indictment against the alleged mob gambling ring described “electronic poker chip trays, phones that could secretly read cards’ markings, and even specially designed glasses and contact lenses.” A 2025 Houston case at JokerStars Poker Room involved three players caught using RFID-enabled cards swapped into play with a concealed card reader.
