Third-Party Poker Backing / Money Laundering
How it works
Criminals use the legitimate poker backing/staking economy to introduce illicit funds into the casino ecosystem, laundering money through tournament cashes and cash game wins. A criminal acts as an anonymous “backer” providing tournament buy-ins or cash game bankroll to a player. The player participates in legitimate games, and winnings (now “clean”) are split with the backer. The casino assumes the player uses their own funds.
On the record
Kinectify and other AML consultancies have identified poker backing as a significant money laundering vector, particularly in high-stakes tournaments where buy-ins reach $100,000+.
