11. Chip Float

Chips

The chip float is the total value of gaming chips held in all chip trays across the active gaming floor at any given time. This represents working chip inventory that has been distributed from the main cage vault to the gaming tables but has not yet been returned through credits or redeemed by players. The chip float is a significant figure on the casino’s balance sheet — it represents cash that has been converted into chips and is actively in play. Casino management carefully controls the chip float through inventory procedures, typically conducting at least one full floor inventory per shift and comprehensive inventories at pit open and close. The chip float plus chips in the vault plus chips in transit equals the casino’s total chip inventory.

In practice

A large chip float may indicate either high gaming activity or an accumulation of unredeemed chips. The float-to-drop ratio is a useful metric for operations management.
