6. Rolling Chip

Chips

A rolling chip is a specific type of non-negotiable chip used in Macau and Asian VIP gaming rooms that tracks a player’s rolling chip turnover — the total amount wagered using these chips over time. The term “rolling” refers to the cycle of play: a player buys in for rolling chips, wagers them, and if they accumulate sufficient cash chips from winning bets, they can exchange those cash chips back for more rolling chips to continue playing. The ratio of rolling chip turnover to actual cash buy-in is a critical metric for junket operators and casinos to measure player activity and calculate commissions. Rolling chip programs typically require minimum buy-ins starting at HK$50,000.

In practice

Rolling chip volume is a key metric reported by Macau casino operators to analysts. It differs from “drop” in that it measures total wagering activity, not just cash deposited.
