4.4 Bergin Inquiry

The Bergin Inquiry (formally the NSW Casino Inquiry) was a 2020-2021 public inquiry led by former NSW Supreme Court Judge Patricia Bergin into Crown Resorts’ fitness to hold a casino license for its Sydney property at Barangaroo. The inquiry found Crown unsuitable to hold the license due to: evidence of money laundering through casino accounts; inadequate vetting of junket operators with links to organized crime; failure to implement adequate AML controls; and governance failures by the board and senior management. The Bergin Report’s findings triggered similar inquiries across Australia and led to a fundamental restructuring of Crown Resorts.
