48. Jackpot Payout

Financial Transactions

A jackpot payout is the payment made to a player who wins a slot machine or electronic gaming device jackpot that exceeds the machine’s automatic payout threshold (typically $1,200 in the United States, triggering W-2G tax reporting requirements). When a jackpot is won, the machine locks up and displays a jackpot indicator. A slot attendant responds to verify the win, collect player identification for tax documentation, and process the payout. For smaller jackpots, the attendant may pay from their personal float. For larger jackpots, additional cash or a cashier’s check is obtained from the cage. The payout amount, machine number, and player information are recorded for W-2G reporting purposes.

In practice

The $1,200 threshold for W-2G reporting on slot machines applies in the U.S. and may vary in other jurisdictions. Jackpot payouts are not aggregated with other cash-out transactions for CTR purposes unless the casino has actual knowledge of aggregation.
