49. Hand Pay

Financial Transactions

A hand pay is a jackpot payout that requires manual processing by a casino employee (typically a slot attendant) rather than automatic payment by the machine. Hand pays are triggered when a jackpot exceeds the machine’s configured automatic payout limit, when a W-2G tax form is required, when the machine’s hopper or ticket printer is empty or malfunctioning, or for progressive jackpots that require verification. During a hand pay, the slot attendant verifies the winning combination, records the machine meter readings, collects the player’s identification and Social Security number for tax reporting, and physically delivers the payout in cash or check. The machine remains locked until the hand pay is completed and the attendant resets it.

In practice

High-limit players may be offered “key-to-credit” service, where jackpots are left as credits on the machine and a cumulative W-2G is issued at the end of the session. This reduces paperwork for players who hit frequent jackpots.
