52. Reel Strip (Reel Strips)

Slot Math

Reel strips are the physical or virtual strips of symbols that appear on a slot machine’s spinning reels. On traditional mechanical slot machines, reel strips are printed pieces of plastic wrapped around physical metal reels. On modern video slots, “reel strips” refer to the data arrays that define the sequence of symbols on each virtual reel. The order and frequency of symbols on the reel strips, combined with the paytable, are the two primary determinants of a game’s RTP, hit frequency, and volatility. High-paying symbols are typically placed less frequently on the reel strips than low-paying symbols. Understanding reel strip design is critical for slot technicians and surveillance personnel investigating game behavior or alleged tampering.

In practice

On mechanical reel slots, the number of symbol positions per physical reel is limited by the reel circumference (typically 22-24 stops). Virtual reel mapping allows many more “virtual” stops than physical stops by mapping multiple virtual positions to each physical stop position.
