56. Actual Hold (Hold Percentage)

Slot Math

The actual hold is the percentage of total wagers (coin-in) that a slot machine actually retains over a specific operational period (typically a day, week, or month). Unlike the theoretical hold, which is a fixed mathematical property, the actual hold fluctuates due to random variance and will typically differ from the theoretical hold over short periods. Over sufficient volume (hundreds of thousands to millions of spins), the actual hold converges toward the theoretical hold through the Law of Large Numbers. Large discrepancies between actual and theoretical hold can indicate game malfunction, meter errors, tampering, or simply normal statistical variance. Slot operations and compliance teams monitor actual hold closely and investigate significant deviations.

In practice

Formula: Actual Hold = (Machine Win / Coin-In) x 100%. Machine Win = Coin-In - Coin-Out. Short-term actual hold can vary dramatically — it is not unusual for a machine’s daily actual hold to range from 0% to 30% even with a theoretical hold of 8%. Monthly actual hold typically falls within +/- 3-5% of theoretical hold.
